The open bilge boat is largely a thing of the past now, unless the boat is quite small. It is quite common to have a number of sealed compartments below or on the waterline.
Complex bilge solutions that require careful planning and execution are more and more common.
Just having auto bilge pumps in each compartment is not a complete solution as there is no feedback on how often and how long the pumps are in operation or when the pump has failed or the compartment has breached.
